Two young men who had accused a Catholic priest of sexual abuse have retracted their statements and asked for police protection.

The men in the Father Renato Kizito saga went to Kilimani police station at 8am and stayed there for half an hour before leaving for an unknown destination.

They are reported to have told police they were threatened by some people and forced to accuse the priest falsely.

They said they did not know the whereabouts of another young man, who together with them, had made the accusations against the priest.

The fresh developments came as Fr Kizito spent a third day with police in what the detectives described as "clarification" sessions.

In his first reaction to the accusations last month, Father Kizito said that his accusers had been offered money by people who wanted to take control of the Sh3 billion property owned by the Koinonia community.

The men, aged just over 18 years, expressed fear for their lives and requested the police to give them security. They have since gone into hiding.

Police doctors who earlier examined the three men did not find any conclusive evidence that they had been molested while the fourth alleged victim, an 11-year-old boy, denied before his mother and lawyer that he was sexually molested when he was interrogated by CID officers.

Detectives from the CID's Serious Crimes branch investigating the accusations have been interrogating the priest before writing a report to be handed over to the Police Commissioner this week.

Not found evidence

The officers had to visit Shalom Centre, one of the homes run by Koinonia, to interview boys and staff members on the molestation allegations, after all the alleged victims retracted their statements.

The detectives are also finding out what went on at all Koinonia Community institutions before the sexual molestation accusations against Father Kizito surfaced.

A senior CID officer who could not be named because he is not authorised to speak to the Press said yesterday that detectives had not found any incriminating evidence against the priest.
