SIGNIFICANT new moves emerged this week in Ireland’s child abuse scandal.

Garda revealed they are pursuing 100 possible cases relating to new information received on a special telephone hotline set-up in the wake of the Ryan Report.

The announcement came as the Irish Government prepared to release its detailed action plan in response to the report — which investigated the systematic abuse of children in Church-run institutions across Ireland over a number of years.

The plan will include more frequent inspections of children in care and the establishment of a national childcare policy.

Plans could also be unveiled for a national monument to the victims of abuse.

The Ryan Report recommended that a memorial bear the words of the State apology made by thenTaoiseach Bertie Ahern in 1999.

Christine Buckley — a survivor of abuse and founder of the Aislinn Centre — said: “The memorial is very important.

“We hope that it is in a meaningful place like a main street of Ireland like O’Connell Street.”

The Ryan Report also suggested ways to develop a national childcare policy and called for increased supervision and inspections of childcare facilities, as well as a followup system to ensure complaints of victims were investigated.

Abuse victims who are living in Britain are also stepping up their campaign to have their own cases addressed.

It is believed there could be up to 10,000 Irish people living in Britain who went through religious-run institutions.

But many are concerned their cases were not included in the Redress Board which considered compensation claims or by the Ryan Report because they were unaware of the inquiries.

Victims met at the London Irish Centre over the weekend to plan what action to take.

A lawyer for the victims said their cases needed to be addressed by Ireland’s Minister for Children. Matthias Kelly said: “These people simply did not know about the scheme.

“It’s not their fault that they didn’t know.”
