A McLennan County jury deliberated about an hour before breaking for lunch at 12:30 p.m. in the case of a 65-year-old former pastor on trial accused of possessing child pornography.

The seven men and five women heard 50 minutes of closing arguments this morning from both sides. Their verdict will hinge on whether they believe Henry Elbert Edgington's testimony that he collected the images for a "bona fide legislative purpose" as his lawyer claims.

Edgington testified Tuesday that he was conducting a one-man war against online child pornography and planned to get help in his crusade from U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards (D-Waco).

Edgington could get probation or receive up to 10 years on each of nine counts of possession of child pornography if convicted.

His lawyer, Seth Sutton, called him a "stumbling, fumbling, country pastor who thought he could make a difference."

"Henry Edgington was party to a misguided, ill-conceived, in my opinion, stupid, but bona fide legislative purpose," Sutton said. "He should have told authorities. He did tell his church. But he is not on trial for being stupid."

Prosecutors J.R. Vicha and Hilary LaBorde said Edgington was attracted to the images and got progressively worse. All the images he printed out had an uncanny resemblance to Emma Watson, one of the young stars of the "Harry Potter" movies, they said.
