Ex-Catholic priest has been extradited from the US to face allegations of sex abuse.

A former Roman Catholic priest has been extradited to Britain from the United States to face allegations of sex abuse, police said.

Father James Robinson was returned to the UK and has now been charged with 22 offences alleged to have been committed between 1959 and 1983.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said the 71-year-old, who moved to California in the mid-1980s, would appear before magistrates in Birmingham.

The spokeswoman said: "Robinson was successfully extradited from the USA on Thursday, landing at Heathrow Airport on Friday.

"He was brought straight to a police station in Birmingham, where he was charged yesterday afternoon.

"The charges relate to alleged sexual offences against young boys between 1959 and 1983."

The clergyman, whose full name is Richard John James Robinson, is known to have worked in the Birmingham and Coventry areas of the West Midlands.

He faces a total of 22 charges, including counts of indecent Assault, indecency against a child, and serious sexual assault.
