WICHITA — A Wichita Catholic priest was among seven people arrested during a prostitution sting along Broadway and in the Riverside Park area late Thursday and early Friday.

In a statement issued Friday, Bishop Michael Jackels of the Catholic Diocese of Wichita said the diocese is cooperating with authorities regarding the misdemeanor arrest. He did not name the priest.

"This priest has been granted a temporary leave from his ministerial duties to receive counseling and help for his spiritual renewal," the statement said. "I am saddened by the situation."

The sting, using undercover officers and officers on patrol, was the result of "recent neighborhood complaints," Capt. Darrell Haynes said.

Five men and two women, ranging in age from 43 to 64, were arrested on alleged offenses linked to prostitution, drugs, traffic violations or public nudity.

The sting was conducted between 9 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. Friday, Haynes said.
