SURVIVORS groups have called on Cardinal Brady to match his words with action after he led prayers for abuse victims at the opening of the National Novena in Knock yesterday.

Cardinal Brady asked those present to pray for the "complete and total healing" of all those who were hurt by the "shameful legacy of abuse within the Church and in society".

But John Kelly, spokesman for Survivors of Child Abuse (SOCA), claimed that by his comments, Dr Brady was seeking to "pre-empt" the publication of the report into child abuse within the Dublin diocese, which is due to be published next month.

"They are fine words, but when it comes to action, the Church are very slow.

"Let's see his words matched with justice and atonement for the victims. We need to see these words backed up by action."

Mr Kelly said he expected the Dublin report to show that the hierarchy protected the institutions rather than the victims and that its recommendations could be even more significant than the Ryan report.

"It's likely to be horrific, not on the scale of Ryan, but just as damning, if not more damning."

He said victims wanted to see "openness and clarity" in the issue of compensation from the Church.

"We believe this (compensation) is going to be another long, drawn-out procedure . . . We've seen what happened in America and Canada, so we know the tactics and the history," he warned.
