The following is a brief of the story. For the full version, see the Monday, Aug. 17 print edition of the BDN.

The former Ss. Peter and Paul parish attendee who claims he was abused by a priest pursued a $600,000 settlement in part to pay for bills he incurred while in a treatment facility, according to one of the man’s attorneys. That settlement was finalized in July.

Ken Chackes said Friday that his client suffered “some serious psychological impacts” as a result of abuse, including panic attacks. Chackes is a St. Louis attorney in private practice representing the former parish attendee, whom the Diocese of Jefferson City has not identified.

Chackes claims his client was at one point admitted to a treatment facility and hospitalized on at least two occasions. He claims his client was admitted because of the effects of contact with the priest, identified in the settlement as the Rev. Gerald Howard. Chackes claims his client sought to recover some related medical expenses in pursuing a settlement.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests provided the BDN with a copy of the settlement Thursday.
