Frederick County States Attorney Charles Smith confirmed to WCBC News that his office is conducting a criminal investigation into allegations of sexual abuse made recently against Monsignor Thomas Bevan of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cumberland. The Archdiocese of Baltimore has removed Bevan as it also investigates allegations that he sexually abused a minor in the 1970s. Bevan, pastor of St. Patrick Church since 1997, has denied the allegations. The archdiocese said it learned of the allegations in June, and immediately reported them to authorities in Frederick County, who instructed the archdiocese not to take any further action, including continuing its own investigation or making contact with Bevan. This is the second time Bevan has been the target of abuse charges- having faced similar accusations back in 2005. The archdiocese said it reported the allegations to the Frederick County state's attorney and conducted its own investigation into the claim. The archdiocese determined that there was not sufficient evidence at the time to remove him. States Attorney Smith tells WCBC News that it was important for his office to be able to proceed with this latest investigation prior to the archdiocese getting involved with its own investigation..
