JOHANNESBURG - In the wake of recent sexual abuse allegations, Methodist bishops across the country met in Pietermaritzburg at the weekend to further discuss the claims at one of their churches.

The National Prosecuting Authority is investigating claims that adults had made sexual advances on the children at the Central Methodist church in Johannesburg but that Bishop Paul Verryn had taken no action. The head of the Methodist Church's public concern committee, Ross Olivier, said concerns had been raised by the church's governing body for years about criminal elements taking over the church in the city's CBD.

Earlier this year Verryn said he would step down as soon as his term of office ended. He had said he was made aware of the allegations of abuse a year ago, which he subsequently reported to police, but the case was dismissed in court.
