The former school chaplain of St Stanislaus College in Bathurst, Brian Spillane, will walk free despite the court hearing he and other staff forced students into group sex acts.

It's also thought some of the students were hypnotised to have sex with teachers.

The Downing Centre Local Court today heard that an informant alleged he had witnessed Spillane sexually and indecently assaulting students during prayer sessions.

The informant alleged he also saw Spillane engaging in sexual activity with students in a shower block, the court heard.

The court also heard when one student complained to another teacher he was sent to a psychiatric institution for assessment.

The Crown strongly opposed the bail telling the court the alleged activities amount to a culture of "rampant paedophilia" at the school.

"The court would be entitled to hold concerns, strong concerns, for the possibility of further offences being committed because, if the conduct which has been alleged by these complainants is in fact true, it would suggest that the defendant, Spillane, is an untreated pedophile and therefore presents as a continuing risk to children within the community," Prosecutor Bath Walker said.

Spillane has had 32 extra charges laid for a total of 146.

Spillane remains on bail on a $20,000 surety

Nine people have been charged under Strike Force Belle, a force which sole purpose is to investigate allegations of sexual and indecent assault against students at two Bathurst schools between 1960 and 1993.
