SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Parishioners at a Springfield Roman Catholic church selected for closure by the diocese say they won't go without a fight.

A group of parishioners at Immaculate Conception Church in the city's Indian Orchard section planned a candlelight vigil at the church grounds Saturday from 8:30 p.m. until midnight.

Group chairwoman Caroline Bobala says they are also planning a rally Sunday at St. Michael's Cathedral beginning at 9 a.m.

The 105-year-old parish is one of 14 churches selected by the Diocese of Springfield to close or merge within the next few months to deal with changing demographics and declining revenues.

Bobala tells The Republican of Springfield that Immaculate Conception has 3,200 members and no debt.
