HALIFAX — The man who launched a lawsuit over alleged decades-old abuse by priests in a Roman Catholic diocese in Nova Scotia is in court today, keeping a promise to his dead brother.

Ronald Martin is attending the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia as the representative in a class-action lawsuit that claims the Antigonish diocese failed to protect children in its care when it became aware of the alleged abuse.

The church reached a proposed settlement with the plaintiffs last month, but now it has to be certified by the court.

Martin launched the lawsuit after finding a suicide note his brother wrote in 2002 that led to charges of sex crimes against a priest from the diocese.

He says the note "tore open" old wounds of his own abuse, and he made a vow to his dead brother that he would seek compensation for all the alleged victims.

Judge David MacAdam started hearing arguments today on whether to certify the suit against the Roman Catholic church over the alleged sexual abuse of children by its priests since 1950.
