SOUTH AFRICA — Several children living at the Central Methodist Church have been moved to a place of safety in Ekurhuleni after about six were allegedly abused by adults in exchange for toiletries.

Bishop Paul Verryn confirmed that cases of sexual abuse had been reported to the police, but could not say how many.

"There are about six or seven cases. If it's more than that, I don't think it's over 20," said Verryn.

This morning a girl was quoted on Talk Radio 702 news as saying adults offered them toiletries for sex, adding that the toiletries were "gold".

Verryn said: "We have tried to meet those needs. We have not been aware that there is such a desperate scramble for toiletries. It's shocking that people get sexual favours for a toothbrush. This is sick. I just wish it could go away.?

The children living at the church were not all innocent.

"These girls are soliciting for themselves.

"It's a power thing," he said. Police could not be reached for comment.
