Bishop Paul Verryn said he is aware of allegations of sexual abuse at the Central Methodist Church.

The church has become home to hundreds of Zimbabweans who fled the country - many of them children - who came to South Africa unaccompanied by adults.

Eyewitness News was told that many of the children were being sexually abused.

One young girl said some adults at the church promised and often bought the children possessions in return for favours.

“I just wish people out there could open their eyes and see what’s going on and try and help they young girls - the young children - who are in there and try and get them out because that’s the most important thing,” confided the child.

Verryn said the allegations are being investigated.

“We appointed hearings to hear the veracity of the allegations - they are meeting in the week.”
