SOUTH AFRICA — Eyewitness News understands the head of the controversial Central Methodist Church has repeatedly turned down offers of help despite the fact the facility is struggling.

The church in downtown Johannesburg has been rocked by fresh allegations of sexual abuse.

Similar claims surfaced more than a year ago but aid organisations said they were deliberately covered up.

Nkosi's Haven, an NGO providing a home for Aids orphans and people living with HIV/Aids, offered Bishop Paul Verryn 30 beds five months ago for HIV positive mothers and children but the shelter's Susan Black said it was turned down.

Earlier this week Jay Bradley of the Usindiso Women's Shelter told Eyewitness News her offer to take some children from the church was rejected.

Verryn declined to comment.
