Commentary by Tom Doyle.

Mega-congratulations to Jason Berry on receiving the well deserved Sienna Award from VOTF. Most focus on Jason’s more recent accomplishments regarding the Legion of Christ. He more than anyone has been responsible for bringing justice and support to those abused by Maciel and by the bizarre cult he founded.

But more important, I suspect many involved in the clergy abuse nightmare today do not realize Jason’s foundational role in blowing the lid off the ecclesiastical cesspool that was keeping sex abuse covered up and keeping victims trapped in guilt and pain. Way back in 1985 he had the prophetic sense and the courage to write the first media revelations of the Diocese of Lafayette’s cover-up of Gilbert Gauthe. Jason’s efforts led the way for the others in the media to step away from deference to the Church and expose the evil. Over the years Jason has been the most credible chronicler of the struggle and a constant support for victims and a voice of balance and reason on the often rocky road to justice. Jason’s contribution to the spiritual and moral welfare of the Body of Christ has been equal to or more than that of the woman for whom the award is named.

Congratulations as well to Voice of the Faithful for naming Jason and recalling for all the long and difficult road that has been traveled by those committed to support, compassion and justice for all molested, abused and beaten down by the institutional Church.
