Halifax, Nova Scotia (AHN) - Nova Scotia Bishop Raymond Lahey resigned over the weekend from his post as head of the diocese of Antigonish over child pornography charges.

A search of his laptop at the Ottawa airport when the 69-year old bishop arrived from overseas on Sept. 15 yielded images described by airport authorities as "of concern." A subsequent forensic examination showed child porn photos.

The discovery led the Ottawa police to charge Bishop Lahey and issue a warrant for his arrest.

Ironically, it was Lahey who supervised the class action lawsuit settlement of sexual abuse victims in Nova Scotia for $15 million. The charges of sexual abuse go back to the 1950s. Lahey, who has been Antigonish bishop for six years, was not included in the lawsuit.

Following his embarrassing arrest at the airport, Lahey sent a letter of resignation to Pope Benedict, but he did not disclose the reason for his resignation. Lahey only asked for prayers. Halifax Archbishop Anthony Mancini said he spoke with Lahey over the phone on Wednesday, but he did not know where Lahey is now.

In a letter to his parishioners, Laey said he resigned to take time off for personal renewal. Neither the Website of the Archdiocese of Halifax nor the Website of the Diocese of Antigonish had any reference to the incident.
