In Hollywood it called a stunt; Rome police must be thinking more on the lines of a miracle. Father Cesare Burgazzi, 51, a Vatican priest led police on a high speed car chase leaving three police officers injured and two police cars crashed. That’s according to a piece written by Nick Pisa that I read on MailOnline, here’s the link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/search.html?s=y&authornamef=Nick+Pisa

The twenty minute early morning chase started in the red light zone when Burgazzi refused to stop for plain clothes officers who flagged his vehicle for a spot check. The officers had observed the cleric driving slowly in the Valle Giulia, an area of Rome where prostitutes and transsexuals come together. Instead of obeying the officers, Burgazzi put the pedal to the metal and tried to flee the scene.

When the rogue priest was finally stopped he verbally threatened astonished officers: “You have no idea who I am. You don’t know who you are messing with,” and that was after he tried to drive his car at them.

The charges include wounding, resisting arrest and failing to produce documents for the car or to even identify himself when finally apprehended. That’s from a priest who worked at the Vatican’s State Department and serves as master of ceremonies at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Burgazzi’s attorney, Gianna Lostia, claimed his client “was not a user of prostitutes or transsexuals – he did not have condoms in his car and he contests the police’s claim that the front seats were reclined.” In the Rome courtroom, his attorney went on to state that Burgazzi “was simply on his way home after a night out at a restaurant with priest friends. He thought the officers who had tried to stop him were trying to rob him and he panicked and drove off.”

That must explain why Burgassi was so quick to remind arresting officers “You don’t know who you are messing with.” Could it be that steps to retaliate against police – just trying to do their jobs – were already in place at the Vatican for the day Father Cesare Burgazzi or some other Vatican hot shot cleric would not getaway?
