PITTSBURGH -- A Pittsburgh priest is on the move, after the pope announced his promotion.

Pope Benedict XVI has named Monsignor Bernard Hebda, a priest of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, to serve as Bishop of Gaylord, Michigan.

In a news release, Bishop David Zubik said, "Once again, the Church of Pittsburgh rejoices that one of our own has been called to be a bishop."

In April, the diocese announced that interim Pittsburgh bishop Paul Bradley would be permanently installed as bishop of Kalamazoo in Michigan.

Hebda has been serving in Rome for the past 13 years.

Born in Pittsburgh, Hebda attended Resurrection Elementary School in Brookline and South Hills Catholic High School. Before entering the priesthood, Hebda earned a law degree from Columbia University.

Hebda also served at the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Elwood City and has served in ministry services at Prince of Peace Parish on the South Side and at Slippery Rock University.

The Diocese of Gaylord is one of seven Roman Catholic Dioceses in the state of Michigan.
