THREE Anglican priests will continue to receive full pay despite being suspended over alleged criminal conduct.

Two clergy members were suspended last Thursday and a third yesterday following "serious" allegations from an unnamed source.

All three priests are from the Anglican diocese of Newcastle.

Bishop of Newcastle Brian Farran said yesterday the diocese's independent director of professional standards, a former police officer, had advised the three be suspended while police investigations get under way.

Bishop Farran said the allegations had come from someone outside the diocese but he refused to elaborate further for fear it would jeopardise the investigation.

"These were quite serious allegations and they would involve a police investigation," he said.

Bishop Farran said the suspension was "standard procedure" under the church's code of practice and did not necessarily suggest the priests were guilty of any crime.
