Guam - Archbishop Anthony Apuron issued a brief statement Tuesday afternoon regarding the meeting he had with Senator BJ Cruz and some lawmakers over sexual abuse by priests and discussions on differences in Cruz's domestic partnership measure.

The Archbishop says he was grateful he met with some of the senators. He also emphasized three positives outcomes of the meeting, which include the importance of keeping the dialogue open, the willingness to defend marriage on Guam, and making a defense of marriage that is not a condemnation of anyone.

The Archbishop reiterated his personal regret for the sexual abuse that affected the life of Senator BJ Cruz. He did not respond to questions on allegations that there are priests on Guam that have sexually abused children.

Cruz revealed he was sexually abused by a priest in California after the Church continued to make agressive moves to oppose his measure.

Also during Tuesday's meeting, a document issued by the Archdiocese of Agana addressing why homosexuality is wrong was made available. PNC has obtained a copy of the 3 page document.

It states the reasons why "the stakes are very high" in Bill 185. In one paragraph, it notes that "the culture of homosexuality is a culture of self-absorption because it does not value self-sacrifice."

The document goes on to state that "Islamic fundamentalists clearly understand the damage that homosexual behavior inflicts on culture. That is why they repress such behavior by death. Their culture is anything but one of self-absorption. It may be brutal at times, but any culture that is able to produce wave after wave of suicide bombers (women as well as men) is a culture that at least knows how to value self-sacrifice."

Last week, the Archbishop released a pastoral letter last week, stating if the Legislature passes Cruz's domestic partnership bill "it will forfeit its moral authority to continue to govern the island."

Senator Cruz said him revealing his sexual abuse from a priest was not to gain support for his bill, but to encourage the Archdiocese "to clean up the clergy."
