Community Support For Priest

In Rensselaer County, an outpouring of support at some local churches after a priest is removed.

The Albany Catholic Diocese has placed Reverend Salvatore "Sam" Rodino on administrative leave, saying there are reasonable grounds to believe he sexually abused a minor at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Albany 27 years ago.

One man says he has known Rev. Rodino since he was a child, being taught by him at Catholic Central High School. Bob Demeo says he can't believe the allegations saying, "he was nothing but a mentor. He loved the kids and gave his life to the church."

Mark Lyman of Survivors Network of those Abused By Priests, or SNAP, says outpouring from the community is expected because people trust their priests. The group says legislative action should be taken to extend the statute of limitations on these cases so they face the legal system. Reverend Rodino most recently served at St. Jude's Parish in Wyantskill.
