A priest in Pike County waived his right to a preliminary hearing this afternoon in Dingman Township on charges related to possessing child pornography on his computer.

The Rev. Robert Timchak, 43, turned himself in on Oct. 20 on 19 charges after an investigation launched when an annonymous letter to the Diocese of Scranton tipped off church officials that someone using Timchak's e-mail address had been accessing child pornography.

According to state police, on Dec. 17, 2008, the diocese alerted the Pike County District Attorney's Office that the anonymous letter had included explicit photos that had been recovered during a search of Timchak's e-mail address. The letter also included copies of church bulletins that listed Timchak's e-mail address as the same used in the search.

Police were granted permission by Timchak to search both his desktop and laptop computers. Police determined that he had attempted to delete pictures from his computer that contained nude or partially nude males.

Timchak was granted a leave of absence in April.
