The priest who Irish authorities are trying to extradite from the US to face charges of raping a boy over four decades ago has been released on bail.

81-year-old Fr Francis Markey was arrested last Monday in South Bend, Indiana, and was remanded in custody at the request of the Irish Director of Public Prosecutions.

But this evening, according to the South Bend Tribune newspaper, he was ordered to pay bail of $10,000, to surrender his passport and to return to court on Thursday.

He was also ordered to remain in the North Indiana/West Michigan area.

Fr Markey is a priest of the diocese of Clogher and served in Co Monaghan between 1952 and 1975 when he was sent abroad to an addiction-treatment centre.
