Independence, MO —

Jackson County Sheriff's deputies were once again at the Independence home of Burrell E. Mohler Sr., searching for evidence in a child sex crime case that involves his four adult sons and his brother.

A shed behind the home in the 1300 block of Dodgion was searched Friday for evidence to prove the claims that have been made by Mohler's grandchildren. This is the second time this week that law enforcement officials have searched the area. Tuesday, deputies found pornography depicting incest. Mohler Sr. lived in the home for 15 years with his wife and another woman.

In the search Friday, more videos were collected, some with graphic covers of pornography.

There are 42 charges against family members, who are accused of carrying out sexual assaults against other family members spanning almost 20 years. The family members involved include Mohler, 77, of Independence; Roland Neil Mohler, 47, of Bates City; Jared Leroy Mohler, 48, of Columbia, Mo.; David A. Mohler, 52, of Lamoni, Iowa, and Burrell Edward Mohler Jr., 53, of Independence. In addition, Darrel Mohler, brother to Burrell Mohler Sr., has been charged and is expected to be extradited from Florida.

Other homes that have been searched include the Columbia home of Jared Mohler, where 65 videotapes as well as cameras and computers were taken into evidence and a rural Bates City property owned by the family.

Information is also surfacing about a former bishop in the Mormon church who allegedly knew Mohler Jr. was abusing the children.

Documentation from 1982 shows that Mohler Jr. and his wife asked that their membership be withdrawn from the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, so they could join a nearby Mormon congregation, according to Linda Booth, director of communications for the Community of Christ (formerly the RLDS) church.

"We just wanted you to know that we have no ill feeling toward any members of the RLDS church. I'm sorry we're so late in taking care of this matter (filling out the withdrawal request from)," said Burrell Jr. in a handwritten note to the church. "We have been faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints since 7 April 82. We appreciate the good influence that your church has had on the community and trust that in the future we will establish Zion together."

A statement from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints regarding the bishop who allegedly knew of the abuse, said the church has "a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to child abusers. When abuse is suspected, the church directs its members to first contact the legal authorities and their local bishop for counseling and support."
