The Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin has said it was "very difficult to find words to describe how I feel today" after publication of the Murphy report into sexual abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese.

He called the report - for which he thanked those who produced it - revealed a "revolting story of sexual assault and rape" by priests of the Archdiocese.

"No words of apology will ever be sufficient," he added.

Archbishop Martin said he wanted it to be perfectly clear that "The sexual abuse of a child is and always was a crime in civil law, is and always was a crime in canon law and is and always was grievously sinful."

He said the Murphy report was "an invaluable framework for how we can protect our children today and tomorrow".

The Archbishop also urged victims to turn to a trusted friend, counselling services or any other support "so they don't remain alone".
