HARTFORD, Conn. (AP/ 1010 WINS) -- The Archdiocese of New York says recently retired Cardinal Edward Egan "aggressively investigated'' allegations of sex abuse by priests despite newly released documents that show Egan downplaying the claims.

The Bridgeport diocese on Tuesday turned over more than 12,000 pages from 23 lawsuits against six priests settled by the diocese in 2001. The release of the documents ended a seven-year legal battle to keep them private.

Among the documents are transcripts of depositions by Egan, in which he steadfastly defends priests and his handling of claims. In one 1999 deposition, Egan says charges of sexual misconduct were rarely proven to be true.

Since then, the diocese has spent tens of millions of dollars to settle claims against at least two dozen priests.

The New York archdiocese says Egan handled all abuse claims properly.
