THE BISHOP OF LIMERICK, Dr. Donal Murray, is facing calls for his resignation in light of the way he dealt with abuse allegations against Fr. Tom Naughton.

At the time of the allegations Bishop Murray was among the former auxiliary bishops of Dublin.

More than 20 complaints of child sexual abuse have been made against Naughton, who has twice been convicted of child sexual abuse.

In 1983, while he was a curate in Valleymount, two parishioners expressed their concerns to Bishop Murray. A parish priest also investigated the complaints, but concluded they were unfounded. A short time later Naughton was moved to Donnycarney parish, where he seriously sexually assaulted an 11-year-old altar boy.

The Dublin Commission has described Bishop Murray's handling of the investigation as 'inexcusable', adding he 'handled a number of complaints and suspicions badly'.

At the time of the Valleymount investigation former Det Sgt John Brennan was involved. Two women had approached him soon after Naughton arrived in the parish as a curate and raised concerns that they believed he was abusing their children. After Naughton was moved on, Det Sgt Brennan started receiving anonymous and abusive letters and excrement was posted through his letter box.

Naughton was relieved of his duties in early 1988. A number of people went to the gardai in 1995 and 1996 and he was subsequently convicted of sexually assaulting three boys.
