A 31-year-old Free State priest is due to appear at the Lindley District Court for allegedly raping a 22-year-old man who is a church member.

Police spokesman, Sergeant Mmako Mophiring, said that the victim was allegedly raped on Wednesday night at about 22pm at the priest's house situated in the church yard.

Mophiring said the victim had been at the church at about 8pm with the priest - the same night he was allegedly raped. He went home and returned back to the church.

“ The victim went home to take a bath, but returned again at around 10pm and then was allegedly raped. The man said he was enjoying a soft drink with the priest when suddenly the priest forced him to his bedroom, where he allegedly raped him,” he said.

The victim went home after the alleged rape and reported the incident to the police and the priest was arrested. He was taken to Phekolong District Hospital in Bethlehem for examination where it was confirmed that he had been penetrated.

"The 16 Days of activism against women and children also include men. It is therefore wiser not to become a victim of circumstances but be victorious by breaking the silence. Act against abuse,” said Mophiring
