Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin has asked the Papal Nuncio to meet him to discuss concerns about the Murphy Commission Report into abuse in the Dublin archdiocese.

The failure of both the Vatican and Nuncio Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza to co-operate with the commission was highlighted in the abuse report.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday.

Archbishop Leanza, appointed by Pope Benedict to represent the interests of the Holy See in Ireland, ignored two letters requesting him to forward documents to the inquiry.

Said Mr Martin: "I will be meeting the Papal Nuncio to discuss the commission's findings as well as the issue of co-operation with the commission."

Next week's meeting follows one on Wednesday between the Papal Nuncio and the secretary general of Mr Martin's department, David Cooney, which was arranged at the Papal Nuncio's request.

Ignored

The Government was last night urged to bring the archbishop before a Dail committee to explain why he ignored the information requests.

The Papal Nuncio has been criticised by several TDs. Labour's Pat Rabbitte accused him of being "contemptuous".

Fianna Fail's Mary O'Rourke also hit out, saying: "Consider the discourtesy of the head of the Vatican parading around Ireland in his wonderful glitzy clothes but not replying to letters."

Tuesday's meeting takes place less than 24 hours before the Irish Bishops Conference meets for the first time since the publication of the Report.
