IRELAND--Ireland's most senior Catholic said on Saturday he will visit Pope Benedict XVI this week to discuss a damning report detailing the cover-up of decades of child sex abuse by clerics.

Cardinal Sean Brady, Catholic Primate of All Ireland, told RTE state television he would travel to the Vatican with Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin to brief the pontiff on the findings and the public response.

Following a three-year investigation in the Archdiocese of Dublin, the report published in November concluded that four archbishops routinely protected abusers and failed to inform police of the allegations.

"I know very many people are very angry with their church and their bishops at this time in Ireland, and rightly so," Brady told RTE.

"Let me give you an example of the kind of thing I'm reading in letters these days. A grandmother wrote to me... who said she raised six children and trained them to respect the church.

"And she says, 'God forgive me for trusting you lot'.

"I know we have failed people and especially survivors of abuse and that now is the time for action and accountability, and taking of responsibility for what has taken place.

"Archbishop Martin and I are going to Rome to meet Pope Benedict," Brady said, adding: "We will tell him what is in the report... and we hope he will help us to address it."

The pair made a similar trip after a report in May revealed endemic sexual, physical and emotional abuse of children in Catholic-run homes. Martin said at the time the pope was "visibly upset" at the findings.
