"I'M absolutely speechless with joy," said the sister of murdered schoolgirl Bernadette Connolly when told that the Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern had ordered the re-opening of the investigation.

"The whole family will be absolutely thrilled to bits with this news. I'm stunned.

"It's the best news I've ever got," said Kerrie Aldridge at her family home in County Sligo today. "This is brilliant.

"We are meeting with the gardai this afternoon in Carrick-on-Shannon about the case but I did not know about this.

"It's just great," she said.

clothing

The truth of who killed her 10-year-old sister 40 years ago might finally be revealed, she hoped.

"We just want the truth," she said.

She said the family had always been dismayed that their sister's bicycle and items of her clothing in the possession of the garda had been declared as unaccounted for.

They hoped that these items being stored by gardai would be found by officers so that modern DNA evidence techniques might be used to assist the probe.

Ms Aldridge said she was also very interested to discover the extent of contacts between senior gardai and members of the hierarchy during the official investigation.

letter

She will be seeking to discover more about the existence of a letter in which it was claimed that a senior garda officer was in contact with a senior churchman at Archbishop's House in Dublin about the investigation.
