Australia -- The 24 men have joined a class action lawsuit for damages for abuse they suffered at the hands of Father John Sidney Denham.

Denham is accused of molesting 40 boys, mainly at a Newcastle Catholic High School in the 1970's and 80's.

He has pleaded guilty to 29 child sex offences and a further 29 will be taken into account during sentencing proceedings, starting in Sydney today.

A lawyer acting for Denham's victims has told the ABC that he is hoping to avoid court and negotiate a settlement with the Maitland Newcastle Catholic Diocese.

It is understood each victim could be paid hundreds of thousands of dollars.

On Friday, Pope Benedict apologised again for the actions of some members of the clergy.
