South Africa -- Eyewitness News has learnt that the custodian of the Central Methodist Church Bishop Paul Verryn allegedly acted unilaterally - in trying to launch a high court application on behalf of the mission.

An urgent application for a custodian to be appointed to oversee the welfare of minors at the church in central Johannesburg, was postponed in the South Gauteng High Court on Tuesday.

According to court papers the application was brought by Verryn and the Central Methodist mission.

The Methodist Church of Southern Africa's constitution only allows the presiding bishop or the church's general secretary to bring an application before the court.

"Mr. Bishop Paul Verryn has acted unilaterally and without the support of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa," said the church's head Ivan Abrahams.

The Methodist church has been severely criticised in the past for the humanitarian crisis at its mission in downtown Johannesburg. The city centre church is home to thousands of migrants, mostly Zimbabweans.

In recent months the mission has been rocked by sexual abuse allegations sparking an outcry for unaccompanied minors there to be removed to places of safety.

Meanwhile Verryn has referred all queries to the presiding bishop.
