Want to be among the first to know who Pope Benedict XVI appoints as bishop of Springfield?

There's a text for that.

The Catholic Diocese of Springfield is taking advantage of the Internet and cell technologies to spread the word when the new bishop is announced. The diocese covers 131 parishes in Madison County and 27 other counties in central Illinois.

"Seeing the success the Archdiocese of St. Louis had last year in breaking the news of its new archbishop, we felt this would be a wonderful way of using today's technology to immediately inform the 150,000 Catholics of the diocese who their new shepherd will be," said Michael Hoerner, the diocesan Web master who coordinated the effort.

Go to www.dio.org/text and complete the sign-up form to get the text. Subscribers to the online version of Catholic Times will receive an e-mail news alert about the appointment.

The Vatican Press Office usually announces bishop appointments at 5 a.m. CST, which is noon Rome time.

The announcement will also be posted on the diocesan Web site and Facebook account (www.facebook.com/diospringfield). On-line subscribers to Catholic Times will be notified by e-mail.

The diocese has been without a bishop since June 3, when Pope Benedict appointed then-Bishop George J. Lucas Archbishop of Omaha. Monsignor Carl Kemme has been serving as diocesan administrator.
