JOSEPH G. CASCIANO In post since 2005

The superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Scranton has been granted a leave of absence.

Diocesan officials did not give a reason for the leave of Joseph G. Casciano, who has overseen schools in the 11-county diocese since 2005.

Mr. Casciano is also taking a leave of absence from his job as acting secretary for parish life and evangelization. When reached Thursday at his West Scranton home, Mr. Casciano said he had no comment and referred all questions to the diocese.

Cardinal Justin Rigali, apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Scranton, has appointed Kathleen P. Hanlon as acting superintendent.

Ms. Hanlon had been serving as the system administrator for the Holy Cross and Holy Redeemer regional school systems.

David A. Clarke has been appointed acting secretary for parish life and evangelization.

Mr. Casciano started his career with the diocese in 1977 as a junior high teacher at St. Patrick's School, now All Saints Academy in Scranton.

He was principal of LaSalle Academy in the early 1990s and principal at Bishop O'Hara High School from 1995 to 1998, until he was named director of the office of parish ministries.

As superintendent of schools, he helped lead the systems through consolidations and closures after declining student enrollment.
