A week after Shorewood priest Alejandro Flores apparently jumped from a church balcony amid sex abuse allegations, Kane County prosecutors said uncertainty over Flores' condition has played a role in the investigation.

State's Attorney John Barsanti said Tuesday the probe is ongoing into claims against Flores brought by the family of a St. Charles boy.

But, Barsanti said, the timing of any arrest is tied to the shape Flores is in.

Barsanti said the state could become liable for Flores' medical expenses "once he's in custody."

"If we arrest this guy, he becomes our problem," Barsanti said, while adding that from a prosecution and public safety standpoint, "the money on this will always be secondary."

Flores is "physically unable" to leave the hospital, Barsanti said. No condition update was available on Tuesday.

Flores was found inside the shuttered St. Mary's Carmelite Church in Joliet on Jan. 6. He is believed to have jumped from the balcony, after officials of the Joliet Diocese contacted authorities and St. Charles police received a sex assault report from a family.
