ST. CHARLES – Kane County prosecutors continue to investigate allegations that a Joliet priest that attempted to kill himself last week molested a St. Charles child.

The Rev. Alejandro Flores, 37, jumped from a 20-foot church balcony Jan. 6 in an apparent suicide attempt, according to police and Joliet Diocese officials. Two days prior, a St. Charles family filed a report with St. Charles police, alleging Flores sexually abused their child.

State's Attorney John Barsanti said Tuesday Flores remains hospitalized, but his condition is unclear. That uncertainty could affect the investigation in terms of when officials might arrest Flores.

"Once we put him in custody, you can make an argument that the county is responsible for his medical bills," Barsanti said.

Although Barsanti added that public safety will be put before financial reasons, he said it is a consideration.

Barsanti also said he has been in contact with the hospital, requesting that his office be notified of any changes in Flores' condition.

Meanwhile, Barsanti said his investigators are "solidifying statements" in the sexual abuse allegations.

Diocese officials have said the family is not part of Holy Family Parish, where Flores was the parochial vicar.

He was removed from his duties once allegations surfaced.
