Accusations relate to incidents that allegedly took place as far back as 1967

A priest in Chatham, Ont., has been charged with several sex offences dating back more than 40 years.

Chatham-Kent police arrested Meurig Pari Lloyd, 79, on Tuesday at his home in Chatham.

Police said a woman recently contacted them and made allegations the priest abused her when she was between the ages of eight and 15, beginning in 1967.

Lloyd is charged with two counts each of rape, gross indecency, having intercourse with a female under 14, and one count of indecent assault on a female, said police. Those charges can no longer be found in the Criminal Code of Canada, but were listed as crimes in 1967.

The assaults are alleged to have occurred inside St. Paul’s Anglican Church and Holy Trinity Church, both in Chatham, and at a private residence.

Lloyd served as the head of several Anglican churches in Chatham between 1967 and 1969. He also ministered in northern Ontario and Manitoba from 1981 to 1995, before retiring as a full-time priest. He still ministers part-time at churches in Rodney and West Lorne, Ont.

Chatham-Kent police hope if there are any other complainants, they will come forward.
