A Wisconsin lawmaker had the effrontery to question Archbishop Jerome Listecki as to how the Milwaukee archdiocese regards its disgraced former Archbishop Rembert Weakland.

Grothman asked Listecki about Weakland’s current status. “Does he have any position of honor still in the church? Is he still over anybody or have any authority at all?” Listecki said no, that Weakland is “totally retired.”

Retired, yes. Authority, no. Now let’s go back to the “position of honor” question, and examine that bronze bas-relief in the cathedral.

The headline in one local media outlet read that Grothman had “insulted” the former archbishop by referring to him as a “piece of work.” No insult at all there; the description was entirely accurate. A piece of work: a work of art.
