Police in Chatham have filed charges against a retired Anglican minister over an alleged sexual assault dating back about 40 years.

A woman claims she was assaulted inside St. Paul's Anglican Church, Holy Trinity Church and in a private home when she was between eight and 15.

The suspect, 79-year-old Meurig Pari Lloyd, is charged with two counts each of rape, gross indecency, and intercourse with a female under the age of 14.

He was also charged with indecent assault on a female.

Constable Michael Pearce says the wording of the charges is based on what appeared in the Criminal Code at the time of the alleged offences.

Lloyd served at various Anglican churches in Chatham between 1967 and 1969, then at churches in northern Ontario and Manitoba before retiring in 1995.
