BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Bishop Burbidge of the Diocese of Raleigh is speaking out about the allegations involving a priest having sexual relations with a minor.

Father Edgar Sepulveda, 47, is facing one count of 2nd degree Sexual Offense and one count of Sexual Battery.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, Father Sepulveda was visiting church members in Brunswick County when he was accused of committing the crimes against a juvenile male in May 2009.

Sepulveda stayed with the boy's family while visiting St. Brendan The Navigator in Shallotte as a guest pastor.

Reverend Michael Burbidge of the Bishop of Raleigh said bishops throughout the country have made a promise to report an allegation immediately.

"We immediately hand that over to the legal authorities, and in this particular situation that is exactly what we did," said Burbidge.

Sepulveda said he plans to hire his own attorney and is expected to appear in court in February.
