  Msgr. Mulvey Named Bishop

AUSTIN (TX) -- Pope Benedict XVI has selected Msgr. W. Michael Mulvey, current administrator of the Diocese of Austin, to be the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Corpus Christi.

Bishop-designate Mulvey will succeed retiring Bishop Edmond Carmody, who was installed as the seventh Bishop of the Diocese of Corpus Christi in March 2000. The Mass of Ordination and Installation will be March 25 in Corpus Christi.


Bishop-designate Mulvey was born Aug. 23, 1949, the second of six children, to Daniel H. Mulvey Jr. and Marjorie Jane Patterson Mulvey. His siblings are Dan, Martha, John, Tim and Kim. He has 12 nieces and nephews.

All of his education was completed at Catholic schools including St. Theresa and St. Cecilia in Houston and St. Thomas High School in Houston (1963-1966). He was confirmed by Bishop Wendelin J. Nold at St. Cecilia Parish in Houston. He attended St. Edward's Catholic High School in Austin (1967) and St. Edward's University, where he graduated in 1971 with a BBA. He attended seminary at the North American College in Rome from 1971-1976. From 1971-1974 he earned his bachelor's degree of Sacred Theology from St. Thomas University (Angelicum) and from 1974-1976, he earned his licentiate (master's degree) in Sacred Theology from Gregorian University.

He was one of 359 priests ordained by Pope Paul VI in 1975 in St. Peter's Square. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Austin.

As a priest of the Diocese of Austin, Bishop-designate Mulvey has had the following assignments:

* v 1976 – 1977: Associate Pastor St. Mary/Our Lady of Guadalupe Parishes in Taylor

* v 1977 – 1980: Associate Pastor St. Louis Parish in Austin

* v 1980 – 1981: Further studies on a sabbatical with the Focolare Movement

* v 1981 – 1986: Chaplain to Reicher Catholic High School in Waco

* v 1984 –1986: Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Waco

* v 1986 – 1992: Director of Spiritual Formation at St. Mary's Seminary in Houston

* v 1992 – 1995: Pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in College Station

* v 1995 – 1997: Associate Director of Center for Spirituality for Diocesan Priests of the Focolare Movement in Florence, Italy

* v 1997 – 1999: Director of Center for Spirituality for Diocesan Priests of the Focolare Movement in Hyde Park, N.Y.

* v 1999 – 2004: Pastor of St. Helen Parish in Georgetown

* v 2004 – 2007: Chancellor of the Diocese of Austin

* v 2007 – 2009: Vicar General of the Diocese of Austin

* v August 2009: Vice Rector, St. Mary's Seminary in Houston

* v August 24, 2009: Elected administrator of the Diocese of Austin

Bishop-designate Mulvey is one of two former pastors of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in College Station who have been elevated to bishop. The other is Bishop Patrick Zurek, the current Bishop of Amarillo. He is happy to be the bishop of the only diocese in the world named after the Body of Christ. A new bishop has not been appointed for Austin. Until a new bishop is appointed, Bishop-designate Mulvey will continue to serve as administrator of the Diocese of Austin.
