SOUTH AFRICA -- Central Methodist Church's Reverend Paul Verryn has been suspended but the church said structures will be put in place to ensure the mission is run properly.

Verryn was relieved of his duties earlier this week, on unspecified charges.

Last year, Eyewitness News revealed that children were being forced to prostitute themselves at the church to survive.

Most of the people living there are Zimbabwean refugees.

The suspension of Verryn came as little surprise.

Following xenophobic attacks in May 2008, Verryn took in thousands of foreign nationals with nowhere else to go.

However, in recent months the former bishop increasingly came under attack for the deteriorating situation at the Central Methodist Church mission.

After news of his suspension broke, Verryn was reluctant to comment.

He is due to face a disciplinary hearing next month.
