JOHANNESBURG - The fight for the job of Central Methodist Church Bishop Paul Verryn has entered cyberspace.

Just hours after a Facebook page, Friends of Paul Verryn, was started it showed “viral” growth with scores of “fans” joining in overwhelming support for the controversial cleric.

The page was started by radio producer Wendy Landau who said it was a public platform for the Paul Verryn Support Committee.

“This page is a rallying point for real-life and virtual friends of Paul Verryn who stand behind him wholeheartedly,” she wrote.

The Facebook page says: “Media coverage of Paul Verryn has this week been very unbalanced and full of innuendo.

“The leadership of the Methodist Church of SA must take responsibility for this because they suspended him and then would not disclose the charges which led to widespread speculation in the media.”

Consensus in the comments on the page “wall” is that Verryn should be thanked for his efforts and supported rather than being suspended and submitted to a disciplinary hearing.
