The Methodist Church of Southern Africa on Monday confirmed it had received a request for a postponement of Reverend Paul Verryn’s disciplinary hearing.

The church’s lawyer Bongani Khoza commented: “Verryn’s representatives are seeking a postponement of the hearing of 1 February. I cannot comment further.”

The former bishop of the Central Methodist Church was suspended last week for disobeying instructions from church elders and Verryn wants oppose the move.

The decision on whether or not to grant a postponement of Verryn’s disciplinary hearing now lies with the church’s convenor who is out of the country.

While Verryn has put the reasons for his suspension down to a dispute with the presiding Bishop Ivan Abrahams, the church has vehemently denied this.

The disciplinary hearing will be held under the auspices of the district disciplinary committee who will forward their decision to the connexional disciplinary committee.
