IRELAND -- A PRIEST accused of sexually assaulting a Co Louth teenager has been acquitted by direction of the trial judge after he ruled that the inadmissibility of the woman's psychiatric notes was prejudicial to the defence.

The Co Louth woman, who is now aged 42, told Dublin Circuit Criminal Court she was abused between 13 and 14 years old in 1981 and 1982.

However, Fr Maeliosa O Hauallachain (72) of Seafield Road, Killiney, Co Dublin, pleaded not guilty to three charges of indecent assault between July 1981 and August 1982.

Judge Frank O'Donnell told the jury that the defendant was "deprived of exploring all avenues because a consultant psychiatrist's case notes could not be produced in evidence".

He discharged Fr O Hauallachain from the indictment and told him he was free to go on Friday, January 22.
