NEW YORK -- A diocesan committee has recommended that St. Thomas the Apostle and St. Salome, both in Irondequoit, be closed.

The committee, facing shrinking church membership and a future shortage of priests at its churches, had to decide which of five churches in Irondequoit should be shuttered. The other churches considered were St. Margaret Mary, Christ the King, and St. Cecilia.

The pastoral planning group that made the recommendation included members of each church.

Parishioners were told of the decision this morning. Diocesan officials say they will not comment until a final decision about closure is made.

Bishop Matthew Clark, after consulting with a diocesan-wide priests' council, will decide whether to accept or reject the recommendation, or request changes — a process that could take weeks.
