Why: Five Oregon women were murdered by husbands or boyfriends in November 2009. A teenaged girl, Jeanette Maples died in Eugene on December 9, tortured to death by her mother. Another girls whose name has been withheld was neglected by her mother, sexually abused by a stepfather and chronically sexually abused by her father until she found the strength to come forward in August 2009. These are only the big stories that made it into the media. Abuse happens when we remain silent, when we do nothing, when we avert our eyes… We Walk to keep the conversation going, to support survivors coming forward, to encourage others to be brave enough to ask questions and report abuses.

Who: You will be able to identify us because we will wear blue t-shirts that say “Stop Child Abuse, Heal the Wounds”:

Virignia Jones, sex abuse and rape survivor

Mary Lou, childhood emotional abuse survivor

Helen, a retired social work who has worked with many survivors of abuse

All three of us attended a parish where an abusive priest once served. We saw how abuse and the cover up of abuse wounded our parish and we wanted to change things in our Church and our society.

We invite you to join us.
