What a great day for football, New Orleans, and really all of America, including Indianapolis. If New Orleans hadn’t played the other best team, the victory wouldn’t mean as much. My favorite teams were eliminated so I didn’t have a dog in the fight. (yes, that was a Michael Vick reference) What a joy to watch a contest where the actual game far outshone the commercials and hoopla. I hope the catholic church noticed how the NFL accurately kept the score and even used instant replay to ensure fairness.

The Real Issue

Unfortunately, fairness and accurate score keeping are conspicuously missing from the church’s all-to-human process of determining God’s will in the canonization process. Head cheerleader and “postulator” Monsignor Slawomir Oder is speeding Pope John Paul II toward sainthood faster than Danica Patrick at Daytona. I again do not have a dog in the fight. (yes, another Michael Vick reference) However, it is insulting to all victims of sexual abuse by priests that Oder can use words like “sanctity” and “heroic virtues” without mentioning child rape, cover ups, or Fr. Marcial Maciel Degollado. Just because JP II for decades protected the now disgraced, serial molesting, and drug addicted hypocrite extraordinare, why would God be interested in that? After all, Maciel was a hell of a cash cow. ( hell is the keyword here, and apologies to cows for using them in the same sentence) So much for accurate score keeping and fairness.

Pius XII

On December 20th the current Pope also recognized the heroic virtues and sanctity of Pius XII. That move received more media attention and criticism than the JP II announcement. For decades, historians have claimed Pius XII didn’t do enough publicly to denounce the holocaust, and church media have often labeled that fact as “unseemly” or “an attack on the church”. The evidence Oder claims vindicates Pius are 16,000 pages of unreleased, secret documents claiming the pope “worked behind the scenes”. Doesn’t that actually confirm the fact he didn’t do enough publicly? Is it just me, or do you believe that 16,000 pages of documents will miraculously appear that claim no person did more than JP II to protect kids. That would be a miracle.

Popes John Paul and Benedict have received accolades for visiting synagogues to promote interfaith reconciliation and dialogue. To me, that is a description of the problem, not a virtue. I don’t need to visit a synagogue. First, I’m not Jewish, and second, I have always loved the Jewish people. No reconciliation needed on my part. If they wanted to improve relations with Jews, I suggest they call off the well paid catholic lobbies who oppose statute of limitations reforms in every state, always claiming it is anti-catholic legislation. Because the catholic church is more interested in preserving their secrets and assets, they prevent every victim of a sex crime, of every denomination including jewish, the chance to expose their abusers and hold accountable the organizations that protected the criminals.

Shout out to My Dad

Thank you to my Dad and all the WWII veterans, especially those who lost their lives to end that murderous tyranny. They decided to not work quietly behind the scenes to confront evil. You are all a shining example of what our country stands for, ordinary people called on to do extraordinary things. To all veterans and those serving now, thank you and God Bless America!

Pro Football Hall of Fame and Relics

It’s still a little early to mention Drew Brees as a future Hall-of-Famer, but a couple more seasons at the rate he’s going and he will be a shoo-in. It should be a comfort to him that the Pro Football Hall of Fame does not accept first-class relics. ( the physical remains of a New Orleans Saint such as a bone, a hair, a limb, etc.) They do accept second-class relics. (an item that the New Orleans Saint wore such as a shirt, a glove, etc.) He can donate his jersey but won’t have to be dissected. Whew!

Remember this Joke?

In the first post of this series was a joke about the late pontiff’s habit of self-mortification. It turned to be funny and true!

Q. What is the difference between the New Orleans Saints and Pope John Paul II?

A. The New Orleans Saints don’t beat themselves.

A sing-a-long!

It’s only appropriate I end this series of posts the way it started, a sing-a-long! Only the city of New Orleans can turn a traditional funeral march into a celebration of the whole city. I am grateful that now hearing this song will remind me of a great football game and city, not catholic saints. Everyone join in!

Oh, when the saints go marching in

Oh, when the saints go marching in

Lord, how I want to be in that number

When the saints go marching in
